Civil 3D 2020: What’s New?

Autodesk® Civil 3D® 2020 contains the following new features and enhancements:

Design Efficiency Updates

  • Use the updated Analyze Gravity Network command to analyze a pipe network and apply the results to the pipe network.

The updated command uses a modeless dialog box so you can leave it open while you do other work.

You can use this command to perform the following analysis types:

  • Resize Pipes and Reset Inverts: Analyzes the flow through the pipes, and then resizes the pipes and resets inverts to accommodate the flow.
  • Compute Energy and Hydraulic Grade Lines: Calculates the energy and hydraulic grade lines, and reports whether each line in the system is in a normal state, surcharged, or flooded.
  • Inlet Analysis: Analyzes the capacity of the inlets and reports the flow, depth, and spread at each inlet.

  • Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis has been updated with the following features:
    • Tailwater conditions can be set separately for each storm while running multiple storm events.
    • The Peak Rate Factor for a dimensionless hydrograph can be set for each subbasin.
    • New and updated storage chambers from Advanced Drainage Systems® (ADS) and CULTEC® are available.
  • In alignment reports for alignments which use chord-based stationing, chord-based calculations are now used to report the station values and the end station.
  • Chinese design standards are now supported for rail platform design. You can select the China_Metric.json design criteria file when creating or editing a rail platform edge. For more information, see Create/Edit Platform Edge Dialog Box.

Production Efficiency Updates

  • Use the Autodesk Dynamo for Civil 3D commands to develop and run scripts for automating tasks and workflows in Autodesk Civil 3D.
    Autodesk Dynamo for Civil 3D is a visual programming application that is available as a separate installation through the Autodesk Desktop App and from your Autodesk Account.
  • After you install the application, the Dynamo-related commands are available on the Manage ribbon tab in Civil 3D.

  • When you attach an additional reference template to a drawing, it is now added to the bottom of the list of templates, and customized settings that have already been specified for the previously-attached templates are preserved.

  • Use a new system variable named SyncDrefPsetToSource to control whether property sets are synchronized when you synchronize data shortcut references. You can use the following settings for SyncDrefPsetToSource:

0        Property sets will never be synchronized when related data referenced objects are  synchronized.

1        Property sets will be synchronized when related data referenced objects are synchronized.

Property set synchronization will occur in the host drawing only if the object has been changed in the source drawing.

  • If the object has been changed in the source drawing, the object and the related property set will be synchronized in the host drawing.
    If the object has not been changed in the source drawing, the object and the related property set will not be synchronized in the host drawing.
    Note: If the property set has been changed in the source drawing, the property set will not be synchronized unless the object has been changed in the source drawing.
  • Data shortcut synchronization related to superelevation and cant changes has been enhanced. With this enhancement, changes to more types of superelevation or cant parameters in a source alignment will prompt you to synchronize a data referenced alignment.

Collaboration and Data Exchange Updates

  • The Export Civil 3D Drawing command has been updated with the following features:
    • Labels with background masks are no longer exported with bowtie-shaped hatches.
    • Xrefs are exploded appropriately on export.
    • Proxy state messages are no longer displayed on export.
    • The option to convert feature lines, parcel segments, and survey figures to 2D or 3D polylines that was included in the Autodesk Civil 3D 2019.2 Update is included in Autodesk Civil 3D 2020.
  • Use a new setting to control whether rail alignments are exported from Autodesk Civil 3D for use in Autodesk InfraWorks as centerline alignments or rail alignments.

  • When set to No, a rail alignment exported to IMX from Civil 3D will become a railway object in InfraWorks which can cause it to lose some of the accuracy of its geometry.
  • When set to Yes, a rail alignment exported to IMX from Civil 3D will be exported as a centerline alignment and will become a component road when it is brought into InfraWorks. The component road will have the same geometry as the rail alignment in Civil 3D.

Note: This setting is applicable when using the Export IMX command in Civil 3D and when opening a Civil 3D drawing directly in InfraWorks.

Other Updates

  • The Dark color scheme and the application ribbon icons have been updated.
    • The Dark color scheme that controls the appearance of the application window, ribbon, and other user interface elements has been updated with new colors.
    • Ribbon icons for both the Light and Dark color schemes have been updated for style and clarity, optimized to work with the background colors, and updated to scale with high-resolution monitors.
  • The survey database format has been updated from Microsoft SQL Server Compact (SQL CE) format to SQLite. To use existing survey databases with Autodesk Civil 3D 2020, they must be converted to SQLite.
    Use the Autodesk Civil 3D Survey Database Migration Utility to convert survey databases from SQL CE to SQLite.

Important: Migrated databases are not compatible with earlier releases of Autodesk Civil 3D.

Design Efficiency Updates from the Autodesk Civil 3D 2019 Update Releases

  • Access rail-related commands from the Rail and Rail Alignment ribbon tabs.
  • Access rail subassemblies from a tool palette that is dedicated to rail subassemblies.
  • Create rail alignments using alignment creation commands which have rail-related settings selected by default.
  • Apply cant to an offset alignment.
  • Create, edit, and export rail platform edges.
  • Create and label best fit alignments and profiles using new options.
  • Specify the maximum rate of change for the superelevation cross slope for an alignment.
  • Create a floating vertical tangent in a profile by specifying a grade and a length.
  • Use new report stylesheets to control the appearance and content in reports for rehab corridors.
  • Access transparent commands from the ribbon and context menu and use new and updated transparent commands.
  • Specify the type of connection points on structures to use when laying out pipe networks. You can also reset the connection points after laying out the pipe network.
  • Assign properties to structures that can be used by the Analyze Gravity Network command for drainage analysis.

Production Efficiency Updates from the Autodesk Civil 3D 2019 Update Releases

  • Synchronization notifications are displayed for data references only if a data-referenced object is changed in the source drawing and the drawing is saved, and are not displayed if something unrelated to the object occurs in the drawing.
  • Reference sample line groups into drawings using data shortcuts.
  • When creating a data shortcut reference to a sample line group, you can now automatically create references to the sampled sources if data shortcuts exist for those sources.
  • Use Autodesk Vault to reference sample line groups into drawings.
  • Add crossing objects to profile views to show where linear objects cross the profile relative to the parent alignment.
  • Enter folder paths, including UNC paths, directly into the Folder field in dialog boxes that prompt for a folder location.

Collaboration and Data Exchange Updates from the Autodesk Civil 3D 2019 Update Releases

  • Publish surfaces to Autodesk® BIM 360™ Document Management for use in Autodesk® Revit®.
  • Use updated LandXML import and export features when importing or exporting data. Import and export rail cant data, import breaklines as either feature lines or as 3D polylines when importing surface data from LandXML files, and specify whether property set definitions are created and applied when surface data is imported from a LandXML file.
  • Update existing object data in a drawing and create property set data when importing LandXML files.
  • Specify whether the Export Civil 3D Drawing command converts feature lines, parcel segments, and survey figures to 2D or 3D polylines.

Civil 3D 2018.3 Update

Autodesk has released the Civil 3D 2018.3 update. Below is a list of enhancements and fixes:

Design Efficiency Updates

  • You can now specify the maximum rate of change for the superelevation cross slope of an alignment in the Edit Feature Settings – Alignment dialog box.

Production Efficiency Updates

  • Data shortcut synchronization related to superelevation and cant changes has been enhanced. With this enhancement, changes to more types of superelevation or cant parameters in a source alignment will prompt you to synchronize a data referenced alignment.
  • You can use a new system variable named SyncDrefPsetToSource to control whether property sets are synchronized when you synchronize data shortcut references. You can use the following settings for SyncDrefPsetToSource:
    • 0: Property sets will never be synchronized when related data referenced objects are synchronized.

The following issues have been resolved in the Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.3 Update:

API

  • Fixed an issue that caused the GetDisplayStylePlan method to produce an error when the selected object was in an xref.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the GetClosestPointTo method from working for pipes and pressure pipes.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented getting the XRecord data of a data referenced object in the host drawing after synchronizing data references.

Autodesk Subassembly Composer

  • Fixed an issue in the Subassembly Composer that affected the direction of the slope of a link based on the cant of a rail alignment.

Autodesk Vault

  • Fixed an issue that caused the AutoCAD dialog box to be displayed instead of the Civil 3D dialog box when checking in a drawing.
  • Fixed an issue where a duplicate profile was created unexpectedly after synchronizing a referenced corridor.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the application to close unexpectedly when checking in a drawing in which a corridor had been created from a referenced alignment.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the application to close unexpectedly when using the AutoCAD OPEN command while a drawing that was checked out from Autodesk Vault was open and contained unsaved changes.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the application to close unexpectedly when checking in files if the capitalization used in the Autodesk Vault server path was inconsistent.
  • Improved performance when viewing Autodesk Vault projects on the Prospector tab in Toolspace.

Corridors

  • Fixed an issue that caused the properties of rehab subassemblies to be displayed incorrectly.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Clear Corridor Bowties command from working on a corridor that contained a subassembly that was created with the Subassembly Composer.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the outer corners of corridors to not clean up correctly where there were tangent-tangent intersections in the baseline.

Data Shortcuts

  • Fixed an issue that caused corridor sections and labels to disappear in a section view after synchronizing data shortcut references.
  • Fixed an issue in which nested data referenced alignments and corridors reported being out of date.
  • Fixed an issue in which nested alignment data shortcut references appeared to be broken after data shortcuts were deleted.
  • Fixed an issue in which data referenced alignments were created as the wrong alignment type when creating data referenced corridors that had dependent non-centerline alignments.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented creating corridor data shortcut references.
  • Fixed an issue where the code set style specified in the CreateCorridorReference command settings was not used when creating corridor data shortcut references.
  • Fixed an issue in which corridor data shortcut references appeared to be broken when adding a baseline to a corridor.
  • Fixed an issue in which a data referenced corridor was not reported as being out of date after the associated data referenced alignment was deleted.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a synchronization message to be displayed in a host drawing after using the ZOOM command in a source drawing that contained a pipe network data shortcut and then saving the drawing.
  • Fixed issues that caused a delay to occur in some circumstances when creating data shortcuts.
  • Added a message for instances in which the source of a corridor data shortcut reference needs to be rebuilt.
  • Improved performance when specifying the data shortcuts folder in situations where the working folder contains many projects.
  • Improved performance when synchronizing data shortcut references.

Export Civil 3D Drawing Command

  • Fixed an issue where the Export Civil 3D Drawing command did not explode external references as expected.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a proxy state message to be displayed when opening a drawing that was exported with the Export Civil 3D Drawing command.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the application to close unexpectedly when using the Export Civil 3D Drawing command.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the application to close unexpectedly when using the Export Civil 3D Drawing command to export a drawing with a pipe and a structure and where the Pipe Centerline component of the assigned pipe style was visible in plan view.

Hydraflow Extensions

  • Fixed an issue that caused Hydraflow Express to become unresponsive when performing culvert calculations.
  • Fixed an issue in Hydraflow Express where the depth and spread were incorrect for grate inlets in sag conditions when a local depression was present.
  • Updated the inlet diagram in Hydraflow Express so it no longer includes the gutter depression in the local depression.
  • Fixed an issue in Hydraflow Hydrographs where the total outflow that was reported for a pond increased each time it was computed.
  • Fixed an issue in Hydraflow Storm Sewers that caused the energy loss in a line to be reported as a negative value in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue in Hydraflow Storm Sewers that caused out of date EGL values to be shown in reports.

Labels

  • Fixed an issue that caused labels to disappear after reloading an externally referenced drawing.
  • Fixed an issue where deleting a component from a parent label style resulted in the deletion of all components in the child label styles.
  • Fixed an issue that caused line labels to be drawn in the wrong location.
  • Fixed an issue in which corridor point label styles were not included in section label sets.
  • Corrected the annotation along parcel segments created from alignments.

Pipe Networks

  • Fixed an issue in which structure Sump Depth values were set to 2 when importing a pipe network from a Hydraflow Storm Sewers (.stm) file.
  • Fixed an issue that caused pipe network structures to scale incorrectly when their assigned style used the Use Fixed Scale From Part Size option.
  • Fixed an issue where the appearance of pipe networks was not preserved after they were exploded.
  • Added a message for situations where the currently selected structure cannot be resized to match the pipe depths when using the Swap Part command.

Points

  • Fixed an issue that caused the properties specified on the Query Builder tab of the Point Group Properties dialog box to change after attaching an xref.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the point data in a .csv file to be parsed incorrectly during the point import process if the point data contained user defined properties.

Reference Templates

  • Fixed an issue that caused the Value field for the Profile Style property in the profile feature settings to be empty after attaching a reference template to the drawing.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the pipe rules to be applied to a drawing when a reference template was attached or updated.

Surfaces

  • Fixed an issue where the volume of a volume surface shown in a surface elevation legend table did not match the volume shown in the surface properties.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the application to close unexpectedly when using the Swap Edge command.

Survey

  • Fixed an issue where accessing survey figure properties in model space from within a locked layout viewport would cause the viewport scale to change.
  • Fixed an issue that caused survey figure data to be imported incompletely.
