Civil 3D 2018.2 Has Been Released

The following enhancements have been included in the Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Update:

Design Efficiency Updates

Profile Layout Direction:

  • Draw fixed profile tangents and lay out profiles in either a left-to-right or right-to-left direction when using the Fixed Tangent (Two Points) command and the Draw Tangents and Draw Tangents With Curves commands. Previously these commands required using a left-to-right layout direction.

Vertical Curves in Offset Profile Slope Transition Regions:

  • Vertical curves are now created in slope transition regions for offset profiles. Previously, where vertical curves were present in the parent profile, offset profiles were created with tangent segments in slope transition regions instead of vertical curves.

Rail Turnouts and Crossings Commands:

  • Create and edit rail turnouts and crossovers using the Rail Turnouts and Crossings commands. These commands can be found in Toolspace > Toolbox > AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 Update 2 > Rail Turnouts and Crossings.

Subassemblies:

  • A variety of PKT-format subassemblies are included in this update, including new subassemblies and subassemblies that were previously included in the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 v1 Enhancements release. Details on specific subassemblies that are included can be found in the New Features in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Help topic.
  • The Use Targets On the Same Side As the Subassembly check box was added to the Set Width Or Offset Target dialog box in the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.1 Update.
    • When this check box is selected, the subassembly will use a target that matches the Side parameter specified for the subassembly (if a target on the same side is specified). For example, if the Side parameter of a subassembly is Right, then a target on the right side of the baseline is used. If multiple targets are on the same side, then the Selection Choice If Multiple Targets Are Found option is applied.
Note: When this check box is selected, a target on the other side will not be used unless there are no targets specified on the same side. In that case, the first target in the Selected Entities to Target list will be used.
    • When this check box is cleared, the subassembly can use a specified target on either side. If multiple targets are specified, then the Selection Choice If Multiple Targets Are Found option is applied and will use the nearest or farthest target on either side.
Note: When the Selection Choice If Multiple Targets Are Found option is applied, the distance between the baseline and the target is calculated as a positive value, regardless of the side of the target.

Pressure Network Content:

  • New metric and imperial pressure network content is included in this release. Details on specific parts that are included can be found in the New Features in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Help topic.

Production Efficiency Updates

3D Solid Crossing Appearance Control in Section Views:

  • Control the appearance of 3D solid crossings that use the style option by modifying the properties of the 3D solid layer. For example, the color of a 3D solid crossing that uses the option is now controlled by the color of the layer associated with the 3D solid rather than by the projection style associated with the solid.

Multi-Select Projection and Crossing Styles in Section Views:

  • Control the appearance of crossing and projected objects and labels using Shift-select and Ctrl-select. Previously, projected and crossing object or label styles could be controlled one at a time.

Collaboration Efficiency Updates

Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator:

  • Translate AutoCAD® Civil 3D® files to files that can be used in Bentley® GEOPAK® and Bentley®InRoads®, and translate GEOPAK and InRoads files to files that can be used in AutoCAD Civil 3D. These commands can be found in Toolspace > Toolbox > AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 Update 2 > Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator.

Are You Struggling with Civil 3D Performance?

I have had a lot of calls on Civil 3D taking forever to open, and there is finally a fix. You will have to follow the directions from here. Once you have followed the instructions, open the problematic drawing. It will still take forever to open. However, once it’s opened and saved, the problem goes away.

Thank you to Steve Hill at Red Transit Consultants for reminding me to edit this post.

Make sure you do this on ALL machines. Otherwise the issue will keep reoccurring.

Take a stop over at Red Transit Consultants if you are interested in some awesome add-on tools for Civil 3D, Map 3D, AutoCAD, and much more.

Civil 3D 2016 Service Pack 2

The install for Service Pack 2 showed up in my Application Manager.  However, it is not on Autodesk’s website as of yet.  The issues that have been resolved are as follows:

The following issues have been resolved in Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Service Pack 2:

API

  • An issue with the Profile.CreateFromFeatureLine styleId parameter has been resolved so that a profile style can now be applied as expected.
  • An issue where three LabelStyleCollection.Expressions (CantCriticalPointsLabelStyles, AreaLabelStyles, and FlowSegmentLabelStyles) would display an InvalidOperationException has been resolved.
  • The Label.SetReferenceTextTarget method now works as expected for a surface reference.

Export to DWG/DGN

  • An issue has been resolved where the display order of objects would change when the drawing was exported to DWG or DGN.

General

  • Having Quick Properties enabled no longer causes a selection issue with AutoCAD Civil 3D objects, where the drawing would lose focus and a second click was required to run a command.

Grading and Feature Lines

  • An issue has been resolved where extra vertices were created on some feature lines which impacted the ability to create grading projections from those feature lines. To resolve this issue, run the AUDIT command in any affected drawings after installing the service pack.

Hydraflow Storm Sewers

  • An issue has been resolved where the junction loss was not calculated in Hydraflow Storm Sewers when the flow was supercritical.

Labels

  • An issue has been resolved where parcel labels and tables within an xref would become corrupted if the source drawing was modified.

Object Enabler

  • An issue has been resolved where having the object enabler loaded would cause new objects to be added to a drawing when it was saved, which caused a prompt to be displayed that the drawing needed to be recovered when it was reopened.
  • An issue has been resolved where proxy warnings would appear in Autodesk® AutoCAD LT® when opening a drawing that contained AutoCAD Civil 3D objects even though the AutoCAD Civil 3D object enabler was installed.

Note: To download and install the fixes for the object enabler, go to the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Object Enabler website.

Points

  • The point creation commands At Alignment Geometry and Profile Geometry Points now honor the specified start and end stations.

Pipe Networks and Pressure Networks

  • An issue has been resolved where user-defined structure descriptions would change to Null Structure when the part was moved or the invert was changed.
  • An issue has been resolved where pipe invert grips were in the wrong location and had incorrect inverts, and these pipes could not be swapped for other parts.
  • The Set Sump Depth structure rule now runs as expected without displaying an error.
  • Synchronizing data shortcut pipes and structures no longer causes the drawing layer settings to revert to the settings specified on the Object Layers tab of the Drawing Settings dialog box.
  • Linking to a pipe network or pressure network data shortcut in the Link to a Data Shortcut dialog box and then using the UNDO command no longer causes an error.

Surfaces

  • Issues have been resolved with how negative and positive elevation ranges in surface analysis are calculated for a volume surface when there are gaps in the elevation ranges or overlapping elevation ranges.
  • An issue has been resolved with surface analysis where the volume reported in an elevation range was inaccurate if the elevation range exceeded the highest or lowest elevation.

Survey

  • An issue has been resolved where survey figures were exported incorrectly from the survey database.

Autodesk® InfraWorks® 360 Interoperability

  • Alignments and corridors which contain compound spirals are now exported as expected to IMX.
  • An issue has been resolved where an entire Autodesk InfraWorks 360 model would be opened after selecting the Area Of Interest option in the Open InfraWorks 360 Model dialog box.

Autodesk® Vault

  • A drawing with xrefs attached to it and saved with the Save As command can now be checked into Vault.
  • Performance has been improved when checking in files into Vault, refreshing Vault projects, opening read-only drawings that have xrefs attached, and logging into a Vault database that contains several projects.
